George Major's Eleuthera Journal

George Major is a Tarpum Bay bon vivant, who possesses such a bundle of energy, he sits down at his computer every day, and composes his thoughts, and sends them to friends.

Weather

What a great day for great weather. Clear skies, cool breezes flowing from the Atlantic sea to the Caribbean sea over the island. The temperature is a warm 90 degrees with lots of sunshine and great cool breezes flowing over the landscape.

Another great day for the Beach and outdoors.

News

Our wonderful friends from Florida, formerly Chicago are down now spending some fun times with us these few days. They are having such a great time getting back to their native friends and having fun hanging out at EB’s water front bar, the popular local meeting place for  close friends.

Remember that Tarpum Bay, Back to the Bay home coming is only another month away, August 2nd to the 6th. The event will take place during the first weekend in August and promises to be the best Back to the Bay homecoming ever.  Do attend and have the greatest time in Tarpum Bay, Eleuthera, Bahamas during the opening of the Crawfish fishing season this year. Have some of the fun before its over.

Eleuthera and Tarpum Bay experienced a great weekend.  No disturbances were reported except for a very drunken sailor not able to find his boat in the dark of midnight on Saturday evening. He was sharing drinks with some of the local sippers in the village, being entertained and drunken out of his wit. After a little sober help the man was assisted to his dingy on the Tarpum Bay waterfront where he capsized numerous times in trying to reach his catamaran anchored further out in the Tarpum Bay harbor. Thankfully he made it through the night and spent the last day aboard sleeping it off. We may see him come ashore today and begin again to enjoy our tranquil community.

In Tarpum Bay as well there was the wedding at the Methodist reported earlier. The wedding was very well attended by many people and dignitaries from all along the island of Eleuthera. The reception was held at Ingrahams Beach Inn where all had a great time dining and dancing to the music in the air. We are wishing a great congratulations to the newly wedded couple, Glen and Diverne Cartwright. They are happily home today.

Other than that our villagers had their usual weekends dealing with the neighbors and spending much time under travellers rest where the cool breezes and light funny conversation flows with ease until 1am or at least midnight until partakers have to go to bed and get ready for work the next day.

Weather

Our weather pattern is holding quite well these days. The lack of rain is particularly noticeable. Farmers are complaining. Water melon crops and other local farm produce are in need of some rain.  The temperature is settling into a comfortable low 90 degrees with a nice breeze over the island during the evenings. Calm seas and otherwise gentle weather conditions.

News

Not many people have gotten to have a great impact on the redevelopment of Eleuthera Island. There are so many sites, old hotel sites etc. that need addressing along our highways. These are getting to be quite dilapidated and need improvement if our island is going to have a wonderful clean looking landscape. We are appealing to everyone on the island to do the best that they can to keep the sights and scenery of our island in a pristine clean condition.

One community sensitive to this factor of cleanliness and beautification is the small community of Spanish Wells.

The residents are to be commended for the interest and care they put into keeping the island quite clean and orderly. It is quite a pleasure to drive through the small community and observe the many beautifully sculptured front lawns and well organized painted homes along the roads and in the community. The entire community seems to take that extra pride in keeping the entire community clean and free of all debri.

This factor coupled with the elegant inexpensive method of constructing the many attractive houses on the island provides quite a breath taking view. In addition to this factor is the amount of colourful, attractive sinage one observes along the island and in front of the many business houses on the Island. Although houses like the Government administration could use some beautification and nice sinage. Tourist and visitors are particulary tickled with the appearance of a wonderfully designed, colourful sign leading and drawing ones attention to the business housed within. This is a noticeable key to attracting attention to any business. A most beautiful sign seems to have great potential in drawing in the customers no matter where the business might be located. Great signage is essential to advertising a business place. Spanish well villagers seem to be cognizent of this fact and do an excellent job at their few businesses on the Island.  Other communities on the island have had quite colourful lovely sinage in the past however the moral in this area is slipping lately. Entrance and exit signs in the Eleuthera Communities are particularly attractive and have been in the past however much improvement is needed to encourage the placing of lovely colourful sinage to the entrances and exits of our many villages along the entire Island. The more colourful and attractive, thus welcoming and celebratory the better. One cannot imagine the joy placed in the hearts of visitors and natives alike in just entering a community and taking note and photographs of the nice sinage and the beautification in the well painted houses and the cleanliness aspect of a village or a community. These few detailed things add an immeasureable effect to the outlook and the moral of both the traveller and the community. Beauty in a community is something to treasure. We should have beautification contests among our villages to further encourage these events and necessities.  Beauty in anything is appearant where ever it is and is telling of the state of affairs of the person or the community.

Another wonderful addition to the atmosphere of  both Spanish Wells and Eleuthera is the establishment of an all Eleuthera FM radio station, Splash 89.9 FM. This relatively new business has already made significant inroads in the Eleuthera Community and is now being exported to the Small island metropolis of Nassau through the efforts of the staff of the All Eleuthera radio station. The management of the station have expressed and interest in extending coverage of the station into the Southern Eleuthera area as well in order to fulfil its role of being and all Eleuthera FM radio station.

Splash 89.9 FM is an ecclective radio station with  a broad array of programming catering to a wide ranging scope of radio listeners. The format at the station includes, music, talk radio and Advertisement from all elegible businesses interested in reaching the broad range of listeners of the station. We are appreciative of the presence and the initiative taken by the management of the FM station in fulfilling its role to be an all Eleuthera Radio station and look forward to the extending of the FM signal to all areas of Eleuthera. With its formula of a wide range of excellent programming and all island coverage the radio station is sure to capture the listening interests of Both Eleutherians and Nassauvians alike.

Keep up the good work Splash FM 89.9 FM. Eleutherians are quite appreciative of the interests this radio station is taking in further developing the level of entertainment on our wonderful growing Island.  Local programming in the FM format is really a moral booster for the listeners and Eleutherians both in Nassau and on our lovely Island.

Weather

Todays weather is a nice bright 90 degree temperature with little chance of rain. Nice bright skies and another pleasant summer day for the beach. The winds are calm with light breezes along the waterfront, much heat inside the homes. Outdoors is the place to be today.

News

As is customary for the summer children descending from Tarpum Bay and spending their time in school in Nassau with their parents during the school year are heading home to the island for the summer. In each village children will be attending summer vacation bible school with the churches along the island and otherwise enjoying the warm summer in the out Island with their grand parents and other family. The evenings are filled with games like summer volley on the village courts by the sea and droves of children can be found playing in the waterfront Caribbean surf while their elders sit close by watching them as they frolic in the cool evening Caribbean sea, collecting sea shells and other strange debri. The usual children from the village spend their summer days fishing on the waterfront docks and combing the sea front rocks for fish and other shell fish like whelks, curves and bone fish. These are traditional summer activities which occupy the children while their elders are at work and cannot chaparone them as usual. It’s a wonderful time of discovery for the young children filled with minds of play. It’s a great time for city kids to get away from Nintendo and playstation etc. They learn essential survival skills like swimming and an appreciation for nature and some of the fun they can have with it. All in all it’s a wonderful time.

This summer time while the kids are away is quite a relief for the Out Island descendent families living their busy lives in the busy city center of Nassau. It’s a lively time for the Islanders who are appreciative for the new faces and the activities.  They are able to spend some afternoons without the hinderance of the children for a while. The children in turn learn early some responsibility for themselves and have some sense of independence without the close supervision of their children. It is quite a cultural experience for them to be living in the slightly more primative out islands without all the modern conviences they have at their homes in the city of Nassau. Much less busy activity so they do get a great chance to rest and relax from the daily cityscape drama in the quiet natural surroundings of the out Islands. Hooray for Grand parents and happy children enjoying the warm summers in villages by the sea in the Bahamian Out Islands.
